Translation is a nine-minute sequence, which can be used as an alternative
space in an exhibition. I see it as a buffer zone, an absorbing black hole, both
fascinating and disturbing. It proposes a series of appearances and disappearances of contrasted visual elements based on a group of sequences shot on tracing screens, which were laid out on my windows and recovered the luminous projections of the bateaux-mouche on the Seine riverbank. Once I have worked on these details, they act as pure light particles, similar to pixels or cathode snow, which has often been used in the history of video art. These luminous translations appear on the left hand side of the image. They become more dense thanks to the magic of naive special effects and move on to a psychedelic phase, multiplying the visual elements and moving them to the right hand side of the image until they disappear into digital particles. This succession of sequences, which are all different even though they follow a same scenario, is accompanied by a troubling soundtrack, which I composed in 2004. It specifies this strange feeling of absorption and superficial negativity, close to the dark aesthetics of the eighties.
